Handicap International completes project on children rehabilitation

PESHAWAR: Handicap International – a humanitarian and welfare organisation, has completed 3-year project on children rehabilitation at Union Council Lala Kalay, district Peshawar and Jalozai, district Nowshera in partnership with Social Welfare Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Habib Physiotherapy Complex Peshawar and Akbar Kare Institute Peshawar.

In this regard, a function was held at a local hotel on Thursday in which the project’s report was presented to different stakeholders. Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Secretary Social Welfare Department, Secretary E&S Education Department, Partnership Manager, Handicap International (HI) Iffat Jamil, Chairman, Habib Physiotherapy Complex (HPC) Dr Mahboob-ur-Rahman and officials of different departments and organisation were present on the occasion.

Besides others, Dr Mahboob-ur-Rahman also addressed the event, saying that now the government should adopt the social model of disability rather than medical model and work for the inclusion of children with disabilities in the education system. He stated that the society must have to change its attitude towards special persons, adding that the community and government should work together for the welfare of such people.

While addressing the participants in the function, Iffat Jamil, Partnership Manager, HI appreciated the cooperation and support of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government and partner organisations and said that they would launch the second phase of the project in the near future.

She further stated that during the project, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, speech therapy and artificial appliances were provided to the children in the aforementioned areas and after the completion of 1st phase, HI donated two buses, one to Directorate of Social Welfare Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and another to Habib Foundation’s Khushal Bagh Public School – first inclusive education school in Peshawar.
