Scholar Zain-ul-Abidin defends PhD thesis

PESHAWAR: A research scholar, Engr Zain-ul-Abidin of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar has successfully defended his PhD dissertation here on Monday.

The research topic of the scholar is: “Seismic performance evaluation of strengthened indigenous brick masonry infill panel walls in reinforced concrete structure”, which he completed under the supervision of Prof Dr Khan Shahzada of the Department of Civil Engineering, UET Peshawar.

The Research Evaluation Committee (REC) consisted of Prof Dr Syed Muhammad Ali, Department of Civil Engineering, UET Peshawar, Dr Sajjad Wali Khan, Associate Prof, Jalozai Campus, UET Peshawar, Brigadier (R) Dr Sarfraz Ali, Ex-Dean MCE, Risalpur, and Dr Shahzad Rahman, Managing Director, SMEC General Consultant, Lahore.

It is to mention here that Engr Zain-ul-Abidin is a lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering, UET Peshawar and has published five research papers in national and international accredited and reputed journals.

His research is about strengthening the infill walls in reinforced concrete structure. While presenting his thesis, he said that during previous earthquakes the frame structure was intact whereas the infill walls collapsed due to plan failures and debris falling effect which caused damages to human lives and valuable infrastructure as well.

He informed the committee that his research would be effective in reducing the damages and repair cost of buildings. He added that this was a step towards seismic resilience in improving seismic performance of strength deficient structure.
