Dr Altaf-ur-Rahman

The basic concept of Mahboob Rehab Gloves (MRG) is to make the stroke affected paralyzed patient’s hand (s) functional to perform activities of daily life and there will be no more a deformed limb for such patients in the near future.

This invention is actually a brain child concept of Dr Mahboob-ur-Rahman, Chairman, Mahboob Medical Institute/Habib Physiotherapy Complex, Peshawar. He has succeeded in achieving this goal to get a permanent solution for the paralyzed hand (s) affected by stroke, as it has always been a big issue to bring such patients back to their normal life and have a normal function of the hand (s) once again.

As here we are discussing this device, so it should be noted that it has three types. The first type is mechanical in nature, which is already developed and on trial with encouraging and positive results, and soon it will be marketed as a patent product. It is very friendly and low cost and it may bring the paralyzed hand (s) back to normal function. The second type is electrical in kind, while the third one is an intelligence orthotic device which will work through sensors.

It is worth to mention that this project has been awarded by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan as well as the Planning Commission of Pakistan, and it is a joint project of the Mahboob Medical Institute/Habib Physiotherapy Complex and the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar. The research is going on in this regard at the laboratory of the Department of Electrical Engineering, UET Peshawar under the team of Dr Arbab Masood Ahmad and Dr Mahboob-ur-Rahman for developing this innovative product more and more. Hopefully, their team will materialize the idea of the intelligence orthotic device for paralyzed patients soon.

Apart from this, Dr Mahboob-ur-Rahman also has developed the innovative, Mahboob Power, Evaluation and Therapeutic (MPET) chart which is in practice for polio rehabilitation since the last two decades throughout the world, followed by designing Dua Niyyat Salam protocol for the functional rehabilitation of CP children. It has marvelous results in restoration of the normal movements of the special children by bringing them back to their daily life routine.
