PESHAWAR: Internationally acclaimed physiotherapist and Chairman, Mahboob Medical Institute Dr Mahboob-ur-Rahman has said that the government should effectively work for the empowerment of physically and mentally challenged individuals and hearing and speech impaired persons by giving them basic skills and necessary education to make them independent and self-reliant.

He expressed these views on the eve of International Day of Disabled Persons 2022 while talking to media at his office. He stated that persons with disabilities needed healthcare, rehabilitation, education, skill development and empowerment and that’s why a comprehensive policy at national level must be initiated to address all the core issues of such neglected people.

“I shall suggest the concerned quarters that subject experts should be taken on board to bring a prominent change in this regard as just changing the buildings and renaming the offices is not the solution which is why a comprehensive policy and its implementation in real sense can only solve the problems of special persons,” Dr Mahboob advised.

He stated that there was high need for inclusive education in the country to bring all the disabled children into the mainstream education system as keeping them away from formal schooling was a big discrimination and injustice, adding that it was the right time to promote the concept of inclusive education in Pakistan as without such effort the nation would be unable to achieve the desired goals.
