Popular Pashto folk singer completes doctoral studies

PESHAWAR: Noted Pashto folk singer Karan Khan has successfully defended his Ph.D dissertation from the Pashto Academy, University of Peshawar here on Tuesday.

A large number of fans, literati and researcher scholars attended the event. Karan Khan, popular folk singer, resident of Swat gave a presentation of his doctorate thesis, titled “Pakhto Manzoom Adab Ke Jadeed Asnaaf” (Modern literary genres in poetic tradition of Pashto).

Prof Dr Nasruallah Jan Wazir, Director, Pashto Academy, while chairing the event said that poetry and music had many things in common, adding that such quality research work would prove beneficial for not only research students but also would help Pashto folk artists to do novel experiences.

The Pashto Academy had always encouraged and motivated the young scholars to conduct research on unusual topics and bring out hidden treasure of knowledge to promote research pursuits, he stated.

Karan Khan while sharing the brief of his thesis said that he had dug out around 20 modern literary genres in poetic tradition of Pashto and most he had sung and earned him a widespread popularity due to its contents, deep romantic message and music composition. He added that tapa – a three-liner in Pashto became a source of inspiration for most of the modern literary genres.

“Social media has played a significant role in popularizing the modern literary genres during the last two decades and also motivated folk poets to introduce new dimensions in the old poetic tradition and fusion of new literary genres with fresh musical notes heighten the impact of both poetry and folk music,” the folk artist observed.

The artist also answered satisfactory queries of the participants during a question-answer session. Prof Mohib Wazir, Prof Danish Betani and Prof Rakhshanda also spoke on the occasion.
