World Sight Day observed by PICO

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar celebrated the World Sight Day 2021 with zest and zeal here on Thursday.

A seminar was organized in this connection by the PICO under the theme: “Love your eyes”. The function was followed by a Pashto poetry session, photography competition and quiz session, while the students of PICO performed a number of plays, highlighting the need and importance of eye care and prevention from eye diseases.

The Provincial Minister for Finance and Health Taimur Saleem Jhagra was the Chief Guest and renowned ophthalmologist Prof Dr Daud Khan was the Guest of Honor, whereas Special Secretary Health Dr Farooq Jameel, Prof Dr Sanaullah Jan, Director, PICO, Prof Shad Muhammad, senior Pashto poet Laiq Zada Laiq, Prof Dr Salma Shaheen, Prof Dr Tehmeedullah, Director, Burn and Plastic Surgery Center, Prof Dr Ghareeb Nawaz, Associate Dean, Post Graduate Training, HMC, Prof Dr Muhammad Arif Khan, CEO, PGMI, Prof Dr Zahid Aman, Dean, KGMC/HMC, Prof Dr Shahzad Akbar Khan, MD, HMC and Dr Shahzad Faisal, HD, HMC were among the participants.

Addressing on the occasion, Prof Dr Sanaullah Jan, Director, PICO, said that the event was aimed to raise awareness in the society about the prevention, control of eye diseases and the rehabilitation of affected individuals, adding that PICO had always been facilitating and supporting the cause of eye health in Pakistan, particularly the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The Provincial Minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra while addressing the audience appreciated the management and team of PICO for organizing the function on the eve of World Sight Day and stated that Health Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was fully committed to the cause of eye care and all the available resources would be utilized in a well-managed and proper way to control the eye diseases in the province.

The Health Department under the vision of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government was striving on the path of progress and development and the ignored areas of the health sector were being explored to make the people of KP healthy, fit and prosperous, the provincial minister further stated.

Other distinguished guests also spoke on the occasion, stressing the need for eye care, while a plantation session was arranged in which the Chief Guest Provincial Minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra planted a sapling in the lawn of PICO. He was also accompanied by other guests and the administration of PICO.

Here it is to be mentioned that the World Sight Day was also marked under the auspices of PICO in the different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Chitral, Mardan, Karak, Mansehra and Tor Ghar etc. and free screening camps were arranged over there in which a large number of people were examined for eye related problems.
