PMC organizes breast cancer awareness seminar

PESHAWAR: The Social Welfare Society of Peshawar Medical College (PMC), Peshawar organized a seminar on awareness about breast cancer in the college on Thursday.

A large number of the students and faculty members of the college and all the attached hospitals participated in the seminar. Professor Dr Abid Jameel, Head of the Department of Oncology at the HMC and a leading oncologist, researcher and medical educationist with over 25 years of experience in oncology, was the chief guest, whereas Dr Sadia Shah who works as assistant professor in surgery unit at Kuwait Teaching Hospital, Peshawar, addressed to the seminar as expert speaker.  

The speakers enlightened the students and faculty members on the recent advances in the diagnosis, surgical treatment and the management of breast cancer. They shared that the breast cancer was one of the highest causes of mortality among females in the world and particularly in Pakistan where 1 in every 9 females develops the notorious disease at any stage of their lives.

Prof Dr Abid Jameel spoke on “Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Non-Surgical Management of Breast Cancer", in which the students and the staff were briefed on different techniques that could aid in the diagnosis of breast carcinomas in the future and the new standard investigations like 'liquid biopsy' and ‘Gene Expression Profiling’ for early and convenient diagnosis of breast cancers.

Dr Sadia Shah educated the audience on “Clinical Presentation, Evaluation and Surgical Management of Breast Cancer”.  She also emphasised on importance of self-examination of the breast on regular basis for early detection of any signs. A short question and answer session was also conducted at the end of the presentations.

In the closing ceremony, the Dean, Peshawar Medical College, Prof Dr Najeeb-ul-haq presented shields to the chief guest Prof Dr Abid Jameel and the guest speaker Dr Sadia Shah, whereas certificates were also awarded among the members of the Social Welfare Society by the guest speakers. The event was concluded with the closing remarks by the dean PMC Prof Dr Najeeb-ul-haq who thanked the guest speakers for devoting their precious time.
