Planning Commission approves Rs 2,101 mln for Women University Swabi

SWABI: The Planning Commission of Pakistan has approved 2,101 million rupees for Women University Swabi regarding its construction work, external development, transport, ICT equipment, books and journals and linkages with foreign universities.

The approval was accorded at a meeting of the Strengthening of Women University Swabi project which was held under the chairmanship of the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of Pakistan here on Friday. The Vice Chancellor, WUS, Prof Dr Syed Muhammad Mukarram Shah and others were among the participants.

According to the minutes of the meeting, master plan of the project has been completed while infrastructure work will be done in three phases. The new campus site will be functional after the completion of construction work. Similarly, the university has acquired a land of 462 kanal 36 km away from Swabi Interchange through the provincial government.

The Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission emphasized that the Higher Education Commission should prioritize the projects before approval as due to budget constraints only approval would not guarantee their inclusion in the PSDP. He stressed on the need for HEC to have a clear policy framework for universities.

Prof Dr Syed Muhammad Mukarram Shah, Vice Chancellor, WUS, stated that a large number of young women were not allowed by their parents to study in co-education system that’s why HEC should establish gender-based universities in the far-flung and backward areas of the province to remove the hurdles in women’s education.
