Need for eliminating gender based violence: speakers

MARDAN: The speakers at a one-day seminar on Wednesday said that Islam had given great respect and dignity to women in society and it was need of time that we should eliminate gender based violence and discrimination from our society.

The seminar, titled “16 days of activism against gender based violence” was organised by STEP, a non-government organization, at a local hotel. The MPA Zahir Shah Toru, former district nazim Himayatullah Mayar, Chairman STEP Ashraf Shaheen, Executive Director STEP Mohammad Ismail Khan, President WCCI Aqila Sumbal and Maulana Ghulam Nabi were among the participants.

Addressing on the occasion, the former district nazim Himayatullah Mayar said that there were several laws for the protection of women in the country but the main issue was their implementation. He added that the actual cause of gender based violence was lack of proper education and social training.

The MPA Zahir Shah Toru, while addressing the audience emphasized on the elimination of gender based violence and stated that he would raise voice for the protection of women on Assembly floor and try his best to protect women from discrimination and violence everywhere.
