Ban on women entry to market unacceptable: Meraj Humayun

PESHAWAR: Former MPA and senior leader of PML-N Meraj Humayun has strongly condemned the notification by the Welfare Committee Gurguri, district Karak in which the entry of women to local market has been banned and if any shopkeeper found to be selling anything to a woman without the company of her man, he would be fined Rs20000 and his shop would be closed for a month.
In a press release issued here on Wednesday, the former MPA and PML-N leader said that the notification was a big human rights violation as women have the right to enter in to any public place i.e. a meadow, the field, the road and the market, adding that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government should take serious notice of this situation by taking strong action against the aforementioned committee on immediate basis.
She further stated that the women members of the Provincial Assembly should call for a debate on the issue and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women (if it still exists) should call an emergency meeting to discuss the matter and condemn the said notification, saying that the civil society and human rights defenders should also raise their voice in this regard.
